December 5, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian PEN has called on Georgia to protect demonstrators’ rights, joining a statement from their fellow organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, PEN International and PEN Georgia called on Tbilisi to immediately stop the brutal persecution of peaceful protesters and uphold the freedoms of speech and peaceful assembly. The organizations also called for investigating an punishing police brutality, including alleged torture and other ill-treatment. All those detained solely for peaceful protest should be immediately and unconditionally released, they demanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian PEN supported the statement saying that “the ongoing pressure by Georgian law enforcement agencies on peaceful protesters and journalists, including brutal beatings and arbitrary arrests, is deeply concerning.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We call on the authorities to protect the human rights of protesters, guarantee a safe environment for the press to work, and hold accountable all those responsible for torture and other ill-treatment,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Georgian opposition is disputing ruling Georgian Dream’s supposed win in the parliamentary election in October. By freezing negotiations on Georgia’s accession to the European Union, the government has fueled the protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this week, Belarusian national Ja\u016dhien Muravicki applied for asylum in Georgia after being jailed for protesting there, in an attempt to avoid further deportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
