December 3, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Most Belarusian emigrants would return home if a new government came to power and reprisals ended, found a survey conducted by the BEROC think tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An estimated 500,000 people have fled Belarus since the 2020 unrest, said senior researcher Vijaleta Panasievi\u010d. BEROC polled 172 Belarusians who have lived in Poland and Lithuania for two to four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirty-five percent of those polled plan to return to Belarus unconditionally, 38 percent do not plan to return and 26 percent did not have an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked what conditions could influence their decision, 82 percent said they would return after a change of government; 70 percent, if political reprisals stopped; 40 percent, after a change of government in Russia and a change in Russia\u2019s foreign policy; 24 percent, if Belarus joined NATO or the EU; and 13 percent, if the country’s economic outlook improved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
