November 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Russia and Poland remain the top destinations for Belarusian students, found the Political Sphere Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of students in Belarus is declining at a rate of 5 percent a year. Over the past 10 years, it has decreased from 400,000 to just over 200,000 students, institute director Andrej Kazakievi\u010d and researcher Lizavieta Prakop\u010dyk said at today’s presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Belarusian students are not interested in Belarusian education for whatever reason. The number of Belarusian students abroad has been growing after 2020, and in Poland after 2022. All the countries mentioned in our research offer free education to Belarusians if they receive instruction in the local language,” said Prakop\u010dyk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Western European education is more attractive for Belarusian applicants despite the sour relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of Belarusian students in Europe rose from about 10,000 in 2013 to 18,000 in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The political crisis in Belarus in 2020 and Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine prompted young people to leave. Poland, Lithuania, Germany and the Czech Republic are the most lucrative countries for Belarusian students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 12,000 Belarusians students were studying in Poland in 2023. That was the second largest foreign group after Ukrainian students. Apart from Warsaw, there are many Belarusian students at universities in the Lublin Voivodeship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Lithuania, however, the number of Belarusian students decreased from more than 1,700 in 2013 to less than 1,000 in 2020, but rose to 1,500 students more recently, Kazakievi\u010d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germany and the Czech Republic had more than 1,000 students in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This trend cannot be considered perfectly positive, because it indicates that domestic education has become less attractive,” he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign education often means emigration. “Not everyone returns. There are no exact numbers but we feel that the absolute majority of those educated in the EU do not return. The same applies to education in Russia. This means that Belarus is losing young people and these people will not return without special circumstances,” Kazakievi\u010d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian education has become significantly less attractive, with the number of Belarusian students falling from 25,000 in 2013 to 11,000 in 2023. That’s despite incentives, including scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The institute also conducted an online survey of 1,002 people with and without children. Asked where they would prefer their children to go to college, 52 percent ticked Belarus, 22 percent ticked Poland, 6 percent ticked Lithuania, 41 percent ticked Russia and 38 percent ticked Western Europe and the United States. Furthermore, 18 percent preferred China and 3 percent other countries. However, 10 percent of respondents did not have an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
