November 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The conference “Belarus-Lithuania: Towards the Future Through Common Values” scheduled for December 2 is a good opportunity to discuss Vasil Vieramiej\u010dyk\u2019s extradition, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja’s chief advisor Franak Via\u010dorka has told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania\u2019s denial of asylum shows that the rules and procedures are not ideal and need to be improved so that Belarusian patriots will not get arrested, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition leader’s office, he added, sees the conference as an opportunity to improve a mutual understanding between Lithuanian and Belarusian public and strengthen ties between civil, expert and political communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Unfortunately, for years Lithuania knew and understood very little about developments in Belarus. Just as Belarusians were not particularly curious about Lithuania’s affairs, vision of history and modern politics,” the politician said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is very important to explain to Lithuanians that Belarusians are not enemies, and to Belarusians that Lithuanians are our friends. To prevent the regime from setting our nations against each other,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Via\u010dorka noted that the attitude of Lithuanians toward Belarusians has improved in the last 18 months. Belarusians continue to receive visas and residence permits in Lithuania, unlike Russians, he said. Vilnius has introduced a three-year residence permit and started issuing travel documents to Belarusians. “This is also the result of the work of the last few years, and we are very grateful to Lithuania for it,” Via\u010dorka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 20, Belarusian state media reported that Vieramiej\u010dyk, a former volunteer fighter for Ukraine, was arrested and brought to Belarus from Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vieramiej\u010dyk could not stay in the European Union after Lithuania recognized him as a threat to national security and forced him to leave. He was also denied entry to Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
