November 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The people of Georgia “have the right to choose their destiny and European future,\u201d Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has said on X, commenting on protests that sparked yesterday after the suspension of the EU membership talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Stay strong and keep fighting for your freedom and democracy \u2013 your courage inspires the world. Our hearts are with you!” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protests swept through different cities across Georgia yesterday. In Tbilisi, police used tear gas and water cannons against protesters who gathered near the parliament building. Dozens were reportedly arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Cichano\u016dskaja backed Georgians who opposed a controversial bill on foreign influence endorsed by the ruling Georgian Dream party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Georgian Dream, in power since 2012, won 53.9 percent in the parliamentary vote in late October, while the four coalitions of pro-Western opposition parties that managed to enter the parliament garnered a combined 37.8 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Georgian opposition claimed that the elections were rigged and did not recognize the results. President Salome Zourabichvili, known for her critical attitude to the Georgian Dream, also disagreed with the election results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Independent election observers reported numerous violations, including pressure on voters, intimidation, physical violence and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Georgia has had the official EU candidate status since 2023 but Brussels halted its accession process earlier this year\u00a0over violations of democratic freedoms in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
