November 27, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The “ill-wishers” usually use elections to “undermine the foundations of stability and constitutional order,\u201d Ihar Karpienka, head of the central election commission, told military propaganda officers at yesterday’s seminar in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery election campaign we experience such meddling,” the defense ministry\u2019s press office quoted him as saying. “These opponents are instigated from the outside. In a certain period, this so-called soft power starts implementing plans for ill-wishers who pursue their own geopolitical goals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A serious and uncompromising struggle is unfolding for the formation of a new world order, Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin stressed at the same event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIts outcome will determine whether a just and lasting peace will be achieved . . . or whether confrontation will plunge humanity into the abyss of aggressive anarchy,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enemies consider the military a principal force, preventing them “from undermining the government and society and destroying the Belarusian statehood,” the official claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian propagandist Konstantin Pridybailo discussed information warfare strategies and influence of online information on people’s minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus will hold its seventh presidential election from January 21 to 26, with the whole election cycle limited to just three months. The current campaign is taking place in a purged political landscape amid a new wave of crackdown on regime critics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The five bidders include Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka in power since 1994, his supporters Aleh Hajdukievi\u010d, Alaksandar Chi\u017eniak, Siarhiej Syranko\u016d as well as former MP Hanna Kanapackaja who must garner at least 100,000 voter signatures before December 6 to qualify for the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country has not held a single free and fair election since 1996 by the standards of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The previous 2020 presidential race was marred by fraud and police brutality against peaceful protesters. Special operations forces were also involved in the crackdown, shooting to death protester Hienad\u017a \u0160uta\u016d in Brest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
