November 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> More than 1,000 “extremist crimes” have been detected in 2024, said Alaksandar \u017duka\u016d, deputy department head at the Belarusian Investigative Committee (IC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities consider any public expression of dissent as extremism. The IC has noted a considerable decrease in such cases compared to previous years, \u017duka\u016d told STV<\/em>. “We are talking about 22,500 in the past five years,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked whether propaganda and security forces contributed to the decline, the officer said “the system of counterextremist measures is obviously working.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, he asserted that “it is difficult to control all this,” given the emergence of new media, and promoted patriotic education as a countermeasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The situation is a bit similar to the COVID situation, when we did not isolate people but hoped to develop proper immunity,” \u017duka\u016d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of autumn, human rights defenders documents 1,452 cases of political repression in Belarus, including arrests, searches and trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From September to mid-November, courts considered at least 1,213 administrative cases that carry punishment for the distribution of extremist content and unauthorized protests and are often used to punish users for social media posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
