{"id":115047,"date":"2024-11-22T15:10:55","date_gmt":"2024-11-22T12:10:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/115047\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"lukasenka-boasts-that-he-personally-authorizes-internet-shutdowns","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/115047\/","title":{"rendered":"\u0141uka\u0161enka boasts that he personally authorizes internet shutdowns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>November 22, <em>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka admitted that he personally authorizes Internet shutdowns at a meeting with professors and students at Minsk State Linguistic University (MDLU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting comes four years after scores of MDLU students and lecturers were arrested, beaten, jailed, expelled and fired for their active participation in the 2020 protests against election fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI will tell you frankly that I authorized it [internet shutdown] in almost all cases,\u201d Pul Pervogo, a Telegram channel affiliated with \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s press office, quoted him as saying. \u201cWhen you have two problems, you start balancing them against each other. On one side of the scale was the country. If we didn&#8217;t retain the country then. . .\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also made the false claim that at present everyone in Belarus \u201ccan say anything and express their points of view.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities shut down the internet for several days during the 2020 protests. Initially, officials and mobile operators cited an increased load on base stations due to overcrowding but later stopped commenting on the blackout altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university\u2019s professors later were targeted by politically-motivated reprisals.
