November 22, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Aleh Hajdukievi\u010d, the leader of the pro-government Liberal Democratic Party, has announced that his team has collected 100,000 ballot access signatures necessary to qualify for the upcoming presidential poll in January, the state-run media report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The news comes a day after officials boasted of collecting more than 1.5 million signatures for Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s presidential nomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All presidential bidders in Belarus must garner at least 100,000 voter signatures before December 6 to qualify for the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka, his supporters Hajdukievi\u010d, Alaksandar Chi\u017eniak, Siarhiej Syranko\u016d as well as former MP Hanna Kanapackaja intend to run for president in the seventh presidential election in Belarus scheduled from January 21 to 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hajdukievi\u010d said he will continue collecting signatures to ensure his nomination in case some signatures are disqualified. By early December, the signatures will be submitted to district election commissions, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four years ago, Hajdukievi\u010d withdrew from the race, handing over his 30,000 ballot-access signatures to \u0141uka\u0161enka and urging voters to cast their ballots for the incumbent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current presidential campaign is taking place in a purged political landscape amid a new wave of crackdown on regime critics. The ongoing politically-motivated reprisals are hampering \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s attempts to present the upcoming election as competitive, rights defenders say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus has not held a single free and fair election since 1996 by the standards of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The previous 2020 presidential race was marred by fraud and police brutality against peaceful protesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
