November 16, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Most respondents who have been tortured or cruelly treated by police in Belarus after the 2020 unrest say their chances for justice are low or negligible, a poll has found. This comes as the country’s authoritarian ruler runs for a seventh term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A team led by Hienad\u017a Kor\u0161una\u016d, a senior researcher with the Center for New Ideas (CNI), polled more than 500 victims this summer with 84 percent expressing pessimism about getting justice soon at home, and 64 percent being skeptical about their chances abroad and in international organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked why some torture victims don’t seek justice at all, 85 percent said these people fear for their relatives’ safety. Other reasons included distrust for the Belarusian judiciary, government and agencies, fear of security forces, ignorance of judicial mechanisms and unwillingness to take the long road to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The survey, presented yesterday in Warsaw, was conducted in cooperation with the International Committee for the Investigation of Torture in Belarus and the Viasna Human Rights Center. The Belarusian government has designated both groups as extremist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite being accused of torture, corruption and vote rigging by his opponents, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka is campaigning to be declared as the winner of January’s election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
