November 14, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Economist Anastasija \u0141uzhina linked the recent depreciation of the Belarusian rubel against the US dollar to a weaker Russian ruble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe rubel has not depreciated against all foreign currencies,\u201d \u0141uzhina, a senior researcher with the Belarusian Economic Research and Outreach Center, told Pozirk<\/em>. \u201cSo far, the Belarusian rubel has reacted in different ways, falling against the dollar and rising against the Russian ruble.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian currency has always been responsive to changes in the value of the Russian currency,\u201d she said. \u201cRussia is Belarus\u2019 major trading partner; the countries make most of payments in Russian rubles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia\u2019s economic growth is expected to slow next year, and similar processes are expected in Belarus, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Central Bank of Russia has raised the key rate to 21 percent in response to inflation, so business activity is expected to slow because of expensive credit, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Russian currency has also weakened because of a reduction in foreign currency revenues and a decrease in energy prices, according to \u0141uzhina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the Belarusian currency might have been affected by the trade deficit, which amounted to $356 million in January-September. If it widens, the currency may weaken considerably, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rubel fell to 3.3635 against the US dollar at the November 14 trading session of the Belarusian Currency and Stock Exchange (BCSE), falling at four consecutive trading sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian currency also depreciated to 4.6483 per 10 Chinese yuan but climbed to 3.57 per euro and 3.4128 per 100 Russian rubles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian currency lost 4.44 percent of its value against the dollar in the first 10 months of 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
