November 6, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The death of yet another political prisoner in Belarus demonstrates the “inhuman nature” of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime, European Commission spokesman Peter Stano said on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stano expressed regret over the death of political prisoner Dmitry Shletgauer (aka D\u017amitryj \u0160letha\u016der), who he said was the seventh political prisoner to die in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also noted that some 1,300 political prisoners were still being held by the regime in appalling conditions and called for their immediate release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja noted the same day that the international community should take urgent measures to prevent further deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian national Dmitry Shletgauer died on October 11 in a Belarusian prison as he was serving a sentence for alleged extremism and espionage. However, human rights defenders found out about his death in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The independent news website Zerkalo<\/em> quoted a family friend as saying that the death certificate cited “mechanical asphyxiation” as the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Da Voli association of former political prisoners said he committed suicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Shletgauer’s family member said he was not suicidal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shletgauer is the seventh designated political prisoner who died in recent years behind bars in Belarus after Vitold A\u0161urak, Mika\u0142aj Klimovi\u010d, Ale\u015b Pu\u0161kin, Vadzim Chra\u015bko, Ihar Lednik and Alaksandar Kulini\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
