November 2, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>In October, illegal migration flows via Belarus hit their lowest levels since February as the European Union (EU) thwarted at least 2,211 attempts by third-country foreigners, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland did not allow at least 1,410 migrants to enter illegally last month; Latvia, 582 and Lithuania, 219.\u00a0Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted 34,132 illegal crossings via Belarus with 28,272 attempts via Poland; 5,018 via Latvia and 842 via Lithuania. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Baltic states posted an annual decline of about 60 percent in illegal migration flows via Belarus, while Poland reported a 20-percent rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarus-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warsaw\u2019s new migration strategy adopted in mid-October may provide for the \u201cterritorial\u201d suspension of the right to asylum and potentially affect Belarusian regime critics who seek to flee politically-motivated reprisals at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
