November 1, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarusian officials have indicated on several occasions in the last few weeks that the government is planning to ease price controls introduced after Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government is working to eliminate the negative effects, First Deputy Prime Minister Mika\u0142aj Snapko\u016d has told a business council, a government advisory body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Price controls were a forced measure and the ways to achieve fair pricing \u201cmay change,\u201d the state-run newspaper Respublika<\/em> quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government’s expectations that all economic entities would curb prices \u201chave not come true,\u201d he admitted, noting that farmers, producers and distributors could not agree on keeping domestic prices \u201cat an acceptable level.\u201d \u201cAs a result, vegetables started to push up inflation and the state had to react,\u201d Snapko\u016d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He suggested price control liberalization, including limiting controls to socially-important items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snapko\u016d\u2019s announcement follows yesterday\u2019s statement by Viktar Marhie\u0142a\u016d, leader of Minsk\u2019s business association, blaming losses of small and medium-sized businesses on price controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksiej Bahdana\u016d, in charge of the antimonopoly ministry, announced amendments to the government\u2019s price control system in late July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
