October 30, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has proposed to include democratic Belarus into the community of Nordic and Baltic countries, as she addressed the plenary session of the Nordic Council in Iceland’s Reykjav\u00edk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democratic Belarus may become “your partner, your ally, and potentially even a member of your community,” she said. \u201cSupporting the Belarusian democratic movement is not charity, it\u2019s your investment. Free Belarus means a stronger Europe. It means stronger Nordics. It means security, stability, and peace across the continent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician suggested that the Nordic Council should formalize its relationship with the Belarusian pro-democracy forces. Belarusian representatives could be invited as observers to the Nordic Council\u2019s sessions and participate in its projects, she said. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja also called for support to secure the release of Belarusian political prisoners, to help reprisal victims and to draft reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Let\u2019s not allow dictators to distract us,” she noted, referring to the January presidential election in Belarus. “Next year, the dictator will re-appoint himself as ‘president.’ We must reject the so-called election as a farce. We must dismantle the criminal regime and call for real, free and fair election that Belarusian people truly deserve.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja is on a four-day visit to Iceland until October 31, focusing on bringing Belarus back on the international agenda. She addressed the 2024 Session of the Nordic Council as a guest speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
