October 30, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>A district court in Brest has found six local residents guilty of participating in a protest rally in the regional capital in August 2020, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It sentenced Andrej Kar\u010daha, Siarhiej Piatru\u010dyk, D\u017amitryj Bu\u0142ana\u016d, Valeryj Maroz and Taisija Litvinava to 18 months in prison and Iryna Saroka to two years of restricted freedom in home confinement after finding them guilty of violent disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previously, Litvinava was sentenced to 11 years in prison on drug trafficking charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mahilo\u016d Regional Court began the trial of Siarhiej Cichana\u016d, accused of high treason and membership in a terrorist group. The details of the closed-door hearings are unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minsk City Court started proceedings against Alaksiej Klu\u0161ni\u010denka, a member of the Movement for Freedom. The man has been charged with calling for sanctions, insulting the head of state and other crimes for political reasons, human rights groups said. He was arrested on February 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u0160arka\u016d\u0161\u010dyna District Court on Monday sentenced blogger Andrej Buka to five days in jail allegedly for violating the procedure of organizing mass events, Viasna Viciebsk reported. For some reason, he was released after hearing the guilty verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judges in the Hrodna region tried two people under Article 19.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (sharing extremist content). Vital Dzienisievi\u010d was tried in the Navahrudak district and Halina Ka\u015bciuk in the Lida district, Pravo Imeyut reported. The verdicts are unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Jelsk judge tried Piotra Patapienka, presumably the deputy director of local School No. 1, on charges of sharing extremist content, according to Viasna Homiel. The verdict is unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police charged<\/a> veteran activist Nina Bahinskaja with staging an unauthorized protest after she was detained in Minsk with a Belarusian Popular Front sign, Belsat<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security forces arrested a man who allegedly informed opposition media about the movement of Russian military hardware in Belarus. He faces an extremism charge, a pro-government source reported. Another man was arrested for protesting in 2020 and posting comments. A notable actor was arrested for “extremist” comments and reposts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities banned the Belarusian Sports Solidarity Foundation website, the Instagram accounts of analyst Siarhiej \u010ca\u0142y and producer Alaksandar \u010cacho\u016dski, and several other pages as extremist content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Babrujsk, a judge considered transferring D\u017amitryj Ivan\u010danka from a colony to a prison. In 2022, he was sentenced to an unknown term for allegedly insulting an official. Human rights groups said the charge was politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moscow’s Basmanny District Court extended<\/a> for three more months the detention of 53-year-old Belarusian national Siarhiej Jeramieje\u016d accused of terrorism, TASS<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Supreme Court upheld the five-year prison sentence U\u0142adzimir Chilmanovi\u010d, an exiled journalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of October 30, human rights defenders identified at least 1,293 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities have opened 7,400 politically-motivated criminal cases in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, according to Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
