October 29, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has called on Nordic heads of government to be the champions of the Belarusian agenda in the European Union (EU) and NATO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She met today in Reykjav\u00edk with Prime Ministers Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re of Norway, Petteri Orpo of Finland, Ulf Kristersson of Sweden, Bjarni Benediktsson of Iceland, Mette Frederiksen of Denmark, Aksel Johannesen of Faroe Islands and Icelandic President Halla T\u00f3masd\u00f3ttir, according to her press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition leader thanked the politicians for their attention and support of the Belarusian pro-democracy movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a separate meeting with the Norwegian premier, Cichano\u016dskaja thanked him for his significant contribution to launching the International Humanitarian Fund for Political Prisoners in Belarus. She also urged St\u00f8re to support political prisoners such as Nobel Peace Prize winner Ale\u015b Bialacki in meetings and speeches and use all possible levers to free them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja extended her gratitude to the Swedish prime minister for appointing Christina Johannesson, a former ambassador to Belarus, as special envoy for contacts with the opposition. She called on Sweden to further Belarusian interests at the European Council and support a new package of sanctions against Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also thanked the Danish prime minister for a \u20ac670,000 contribution to a fund for repression victims and overall support of the pro-democracy movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja thanked the Finnish and Faroese premiers for supporting Belarus and the Icelandic premier for inviting her to the Nordic Council session in Reykjav\u00edk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja is one of two special guests at the session, the other being Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition leader is visiting Iceland on October 28\u201331.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
