October 25, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The parliament of Portugal has rejected a bill that provided for the issue of humanitarian visas to foreigners facing politically-motivated persecution, Pavel Elizarov said on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liberal Initiative, of which Russian \u00e9migr\u00e9 Elizarov is a member, drafted the bill, allowing people fearing politically-motivated persecution to apply for humanitarian visas at Portuguese embassies and receive political asylum upon arrival in Portugal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, MPs from the Social Democratic Party and the Democratic and Social Center \/ People’s Party joined the anti-immigrant far-right Chega party, which links the issue of humanitarian visas to a potential increase in illegal migrants seeking Portuguese citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three parties hold 208 seats in Portugal’s 230-seat parliament, while the Liberal Initiative has only eight seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many Belarusians received humanitarian visas from Poland and Lithuania following the 2020 crackdown on opposition and civil society in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
