October 22, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarusian penal colonies assign prominent female political prisoners to detachments riddled with snitches, a lawyer for the International Committee for the Investigation of Torture in Belarus (ICITB) told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of political prisoners in these detachments is small but some fellow inmates have notebooks to take down every step of a political prisoner and report to prison officers, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prisoners are supervised by \u201coperatives whose functions include exerting strong pressure,” she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Some of the political prisoners we are most concerned about are definitely held in maximum isolation. Any communication with them was nipped in the bud and punished,” the lawyer said. Administrations transfer high-profile prisoners back and forth from punishment cells to internal prisons so that “no one can monitor their condition or receive any news from them.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wardens have gradually banned women on the “watch list” from visiting colony clubs and churches and, since the start of the war in Ukraine, from corresponding with anyone except close relatives, she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ICITB co-founder Siarhiej U\u015bcina\u016d told an online event today that administrations keep up pressure on female political prisoners who refuse to petition authorities for pardon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
