October 22, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Minsk supports the idea to launch an intra-BRICS payment system, Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ry\u017eanko\u016d has told Russia’s RIA Novosti<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement comes as the BRICS summit of emerging economies has begun in the Russian city of Kazan. Russia, China and other members of the group have been seeking to reduce their reliance on the US dollar for international payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are very positive about the steps being taken by the Russian Federation to create this system in BRICS,” Ry\u017eanko\u016d said. “It’s time to have two or three settlement mechanisms uncontrolled by the West.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US dollar has been the world’s reserve currency for 80 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Ry\u017eanko\u016d, the West uses the current settlement system for sanctions, but even more so for unfair competition. The emergence of alternative settlement systems would cool it down and “allow the BRICS countries and their partners not to worry about the terms of mutual trade.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that Belarus could help the bloc with food security: the country exports food, agricultural equipment, fertilizers and, on top of that, is willing to share its technology and expertise with interested countries. He also promoted Belarus as a transit hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk applied for BRICS membership last year. BRICS stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The grouping, often referred to as a counterweight to the Western-led world, has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Brics nations account for 45% of the global population. Added together, members’ economies are worth more than $28.5 trillion. That’s around 28% of the global economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
