October 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka yesterday signed an edict to authorize a commission that examines queries from exiled Belarusians willing to return home to consider requests from people inside the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hundreds of thousands fled Belarus after the 2020 postelection crackdown and after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By his edict, \u0141uka\u0161enka also ordered officials to make the commission permanent. Previously, it was expected to dissolve on December 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commission was formed in early 2023 of officials and propagandists under the prosecutor general’s chairmanship to inform applicants if they are being suspected of or charged with any political crimes and whether they can hope for leniency if they return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January, the Prosecutor General’s Office reported that the commission received 150 applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
