October 16, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> President Andrzej Duda has told the Sejm that the government’s new migration strategy would prevent many victims of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime from applying for asylum in Poland, TVN24<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the adoption of the strategy yesterday. Earlier, he said that it provides for a temporary, local suspension of the right to asylum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Duda said he was surprised by the move and called it a mistake. Poland has a tradition of supporting other nations in their quest for freedom and giving refuge to freedom fighters, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said Russian President Vladimir Putin and Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka are trying to destabilize the Polish border and the European Union, “but your response to this is to deny asylum to those whom Putin and \u0141uka\u0161enka imprison and persecute.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He expressed hope that Poland will remain a country of freedom and solidarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In turn, Tusk said that “there has not been a single case of a Belarusian opposition activist trying to cross the Polish-Belarusian border illegally in a group organized by \u0141uka\u0161enka.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In today\u2019s interview with Gazeta Wyborcza<\/em>, the premier primarily linked the move to the ongoing migration crisis at the Belarusian-Polish border, where, according to him, Polish officers are facing \u201can organized, large-scale Russian-Belarusian operation to transfer thousands of people\u201d from developing countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
