October 9, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Although Belarus is not party to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka government may be tried for the alleged deportation of Ukrainian children from Russian-occupied territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order for the trial to take place, proper evidence must be presented to the court in The Hague, ICC spokesman Fadi El Abdallah told Ukrainian media at a press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such crimes may indeed have been committed in Ukraine, El Abdallah said, as quoted<\/a> by babel.ua<\/em>. Regardless of whether the children were taken to Russia or some other place, these acts potentially fall under the ICC jurisdiction if the abduction occurred at least in part within the borders of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 30, Lithuania submitted a file on transnational crimes against humanity, allegedly committed by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials, to the ICC prosecutor. The Lithuanian government cannot sit on its hands, the justice ministry in Vilnius stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its referral, Lithuania noted that there are sufficient grounds to believe that crimes against humanity have been committed against the civilian population of Belarus on the orders of high-ranking Belarusian political, law-enforcement and military officials since May 1, 2020. They include deportation, persecution and other inhumane acts, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
