October 9, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarusian investigators opened a criminal case against exiled economist Pavie\u0142 Danejka, an administrative director of the BEROC think tank, the Investigative Committee said yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, the BEROC-IPM School of Economics and Business launched the Business Economics program at Vilnius-based European Humanities University (EHU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators accused Danejka of unlicensed business activities, conspiracy to seize power and association with an extremist group. In 2020, he was reportedly summoned to the Investigative Committee over his membership in the opposition Coordination Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case is being investigated under special proceedings targeting those living abroad and evading contact with investigators, allowing authorities to persecute exiled opponents and try them in their absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amendments listing 34 serious crimes such as acts of terrorism, treason, sabotage, mass riots, association with an extremist group and calls for sanctions, came into effect in July 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities have recently stepped up pressure on their exiled opponents, accusing 45 Belarusians currently based abroad of conspiracy to seize power and association with extremist groups over their alleged cooperation with pro-democracy forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
