October 9, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Reservists with experience serving in riot police and anti-terrorism squads can reinforce elite special operation units, should “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Belarus\u201d be threatened, said Alaksandar Valfovi\u010d, state secretary of Belarus\u2019 Security Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move may boost \u201cthe combat potential of the existing special operation units by a factor of two or three,” the interior ministry’s press office reported, quoting him as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, a group of reservists took part on one-day training, demonstrating \u201cexcellent preparation,\u201d the official said. Similar training may become an effective way of keeping them combat-ready, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry used former riot policemen to set up 22 \u201cvolunteer\u201d units and plans to increase their number in the future with drills planned across Belarus, according to Interior Minister Ivan Kubrako\u016d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian army is regularly conducting drills amid Russia’s ongoing war on Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recent show of force may be linked to the authorities\u2019 plan to intimidate the opposition and suppress dissent in the run-up to the 2025 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
