September 24, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Although attempts by migrants from Asia and Africa fell sharply after Poland introduced a border area entry ban 100 days ago, incidents have been on the rise in the last two months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the past 100 days, Poland has thwarted 6,317 illegal border crossings compared to at least 17,948 attempts recorded in a similar period from March 5 to June 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal border crossings plunged after the border area entry ban entered into force on June 13, according to border guards’ data analyzed by Pozirk<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the initial sharp decline in numbers did not last as analysis of 25-day periods indicated growing illegal migration flows with 2,596 attempts recorded from August 27 to September 20 compared to 1,804 from June 13 to July 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From September 1 to 22, the EU thwarted at least 2,781 illegal border crossings from Belarus, including 2,326 attempts via Poland, 56 percent more than in the same period in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal migration via Lithuania surged four-fold month on month, yet attempts via Latvia fell 13 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 31,157 illegal border crossings at its shared border with Belarus, with 26,144 attempts via Poland alone, 4,390 via Latvia and 623 via Lithuania. Illegal border crossings exceeded 100 daily attempts from September 15 to 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
