September 19, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Council of Europe’s platform for the safety of journalists has called on Georgia to reconsider an entry ban for Belarusian reporter Andrej Miale\u0161ka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appeal also concerns Armenian reporter Arsen Kharatyan, who found himself in a similar situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It particularly notes that officials sent Miale\u0161ka and the daughter he traveled with back to Poland leaving his wife and other child in Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The platform issued a Level 2 alert regarding the incidents with Miale\u0161ka and Kharatyan (covers a range of serious threats to media freedom, including physical assaults and acts of intimidation and harassment).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The platform expects the Georgian authorities to stop barring journalists and media workers from the country and to respond to the appeal no later than December 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miale\u0161ka settled down in Georgia after fleeing political reprisals in Belarus. Late on September 15, he and his minor daughter returned to Georgia from Poland but were stopped at Kutaisi airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials did not let his wife to pick up the daughter and sent the girl and the father back to Poland in the night of September 16\u201317.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Armenian journalist was denied entry to Georgia on September 16 at Tbilisi airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Platform for the Protection of Journalism and Safety of Journalists is a mechanism that “helps the dialogue between the governments and the organisations of journalists, with the aim of stopping violations to press freedom in the member states of the Council of Europe and enabling journalists to exercise their profession without the risk of compromising their safety.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The platform’s goal is to improve the protection of journalists, counter threats and violence against media workers effectively, and strengthen early warning mechanisms and response capacities within the Council of Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
