September 16, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Human rights defenders have designated 22 people as political prisoners, bringing the total to 1,363, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 22 were accused or convicted of violent disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are: Aleh Ha\u0142ubo\u016dski, Siarhiej Ho\u016d\u0161a, Ihar \u0160yman\u010dyk, Alaksandar Malko\u016d, Siarhiej Skrobat, Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Bierazaviec, Ta\u0107ciana Daniluk, Mika\u0142aj Ku\u0142ak, Ihar Ja\u016dmiena\u016d-Kul, Andrej Rybako\u016d, Viktar Daniluk, Mika\u0142aj Misiuk, Illa Sabko, Alaksandar Zajca\u016d, Mika\u0142aj Kapluk, Dzianis Jakavienka, Kiry\u0142 Ja\u016dtu\u0161yk, Artur Zaremba, Aleh Bandaruk, Ivan Ko\u015bcika\u016d, Anton Charevi\u010d and D\u017amitryj Bian\u010duk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights activists noted that the right to peaceful assembly was guaranteed by Article 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No restrictions may be placed on the exercise of this right other than those imposed in conformity with the law and which are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security or public safety, public order (ordre public), the protection of public health or morals or the protection of the rights and freedoms of others,” the article says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rallies in 2020 were peaceful and did not threaten neither national security nor public safety, the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We regard the persecution of the aforementioned people . . . as politically motivated and connected with their exercising of freedoms of peaceful assembly and expression, and recognize them as political prisoners,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement demanded freedom for these and all other political prisoners and an end to reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was signed by the Viasna Human Rights Center, Pravavaja Inicyjatyva, Office for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and Lawtrend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
