September 11, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> An appellate court in Serbia has sent a case against Andrej Hniot for review, postponing his extradition, the Belarusian filmmaker said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed his need for donations as he remains under house arrest. “I am detained like a criminal and must pay for it. Meanwhile, Belarus can fabricate more criminal cases against me,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Office of \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, a Belarusian opposition leader, welcomed the decision and pledged to fight for Hniot’s release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was arrested in Serbia in October 2023 at the request of the Belarusian police for alleged tax evasion. The man has been under house arrest since May 31 when the Belgrade High Court ordered his extradition to Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hniot\u2019s persecution in Belarus may be related to video production for SOS.by<\/em>, an opposition association that Belarusian police branded an extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The filmmaker also cooperated with Current Time<\/em>, a television and digital news network produced by Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty<\/em> in cooperation with the Voice of America<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian opposition, exiled activists, artists, international human rights groups and leading political actors have urged Serbia not to extradite Hniot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
