September 8, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Maryja Kale\u015bnikava is \u201cone of the brave women fighting for a democratic Belarus,\u201d\u00a0 said Claudia Roth, the German minister for culture and media and her symbolic godmother, four years after Kale\u015bnikava’s arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities sentenced Kale\u015bnikava, a prominent regime critic and a member of opposition presidential hopefuls\u2019 campaigns in 2020, to 11 years in prison where she is being held incommunicado for more than 560 days. Recent news obtained from former inmates suggest that she is suffering from malnutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kale\u015bnikava detention conditions are \u201cdeeply inhumane,\u201d Roth said, noting that food deprivation, lack of necessary medical care and prolonged solitary confinement are common in the treatment of hundreds of Belarusian political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese brutal repressive methods demonstrate [Alaksandar] \u0141uka\u0161enka’s cowardice and hatred, but they will definitely not silence the Belarusian democratic movement and its allies,\u201d the politician stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
