September 7, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> In the first six days of September, illegal border crossings via Belarus into Lithuania spiked 7.4-fold month on month to 59 attempts, Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards\u2019 data has found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia thwarted 66 illegal border crossings from September 1 to 6, 9.6 percent less than in the fist six days of August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland has so far reported 485 border violations for the first five days of September, almost 44 percent more compared to the same period last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 28,991 illegal border crossings at its shared border with Belarus, with 84 percent of attempts via Poland, 14 percent via Latvia and 2 percent via Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
