September 7, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Iryna Klazovi\u010d and Ta\u0107ciana Stepa will be tried in mid-September for supporting people imprisoned in politically-motivated cases, while a group of 10 people will face protest-related charges at two trials in Brest, the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In another development, Minsk prosecutors forwarded to court the criminal case against a 54-year-old man from the Minsk district, accused of inciting hatred and insulting the head of state in connection with critical social media posts, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested a Minsk man for posting online his picture with the white-red-white flag in the background, a pro-government Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities released Artur Rybin after he had served three and a half years in prison for inciting hatred and hooliganism, charges that rights groups considered politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ivan Ka\u0161ko was released under a recent pardon program for people convicted of protest-related crimes, the STV<\/em> channel reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna reported that a total of 1,188 people had served prison terms in Belarus on politically-motivated charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian rights groups designated 19 more people as former political prisoners, noting that their persecution was linked to exercising freedoms of peaceful assembly, association and expression with regard to the results of the 2020 presidential election in Belarus and other developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of September 7, human rights defenders identified at least 1,367 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities have arrested about 65,000 people for political reasons in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, Viasna reported in early August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
