August 30, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Nils Mui\u017enieks, a Latvian-American rights activist and political scientist, may be selected as the new United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is said to be favorite among the three candidates recommended to UN Human Rights Council (HRC) President Omar Zniber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The others are Estonia’s Supreme Court Judge Julia Laffranque and Russian lawyer Sergei Golubok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vote is scheduled for October 11, the last day of the HRC\u2019s 57th session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US-born Mui\u017enieks speaks English, Latvian, French and Russian. He pledged to seek constructive dialogue with Belarusian authorities while upholding human rights standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his bid, he promised to prioritize human rights and media freedom, which are crucial for assisting victims of politically-motivated persecution, raising awareness of human rights abuse and holding officials accountable for abuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 2012 to 2018, Mui\u017enieks served as the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights. Since 2020, he has been working as Amnesty International’s regional director for Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The special rapporteur\u2019s mandate has been renewed since 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

France\u2019s Ana\u00efs Marin announced this year that she would be stepping down after serving in this capacity since 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk does not recognize the UN special rapporteur\u2019s mandate and refuses to cooperate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
