August 29, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>The European Union (EU) did not allow at least 141 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus on August 26 and 27, Pozirk<\/em>\u2018s analysis of border guards\u2019 data showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland thwarted 98 illegal border crossings; Latvia, 25 and Lithuania, 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This month, third-country foreigners attempted at least 2,339 illegal border crossings into the EU via Belarus, almost 12 percent more than in the same period in July. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland-bound illegal migration flows have risen 36 percent since the start of August, despite the border area entry ban introduced in mid-June and designed to deter illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 27,872 illegal border crossings on its shared border with Belarus, with 23,371 attempts via Poland, 4,049 via Latvia and 452 via Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
