August 23, Pozirk.<\/strong> The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) has expressed concerns about “life-threatening conditions faced by migrants, asylum seekers and refugees” at the Belarusian border with the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CERD received reports of “excessive use of force, arbitrary detention, and difficulty accessing asylum procedures,” Vice Chair R\u00e9gine Esseneme has told journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its members urged Minsk “to take immediate action to protect the lives and safety of those at the border, prevent excessive use of force, and provide human rights training for border guards and law enforcement officials.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also called on Belarus to continue cooperation with international actors to ensure human rights protection and adequate asylum procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
