August 21, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Performance artist Alaksiej Ku\u017ami\u010d, who was released today from a detention center in a Paris suburb, has told Pozirk<\/em> that he plans to stay in France to write a book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ku\u017ami\u010d, who was evacuated from Belarus by the BYSOL Foundation in February to escape arrest and imprisonment for his politically-sensitive performance art, said he will leave France only briefly to comply with a court deportation order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said he will go to Poland because he is in the European Union on a Polish visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I can make a step to Poland and a step right back to France, and I will be legal,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge rejected prosecutors’ motion to bar him from France and the EU for two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ku\u017ami\u010d said his book will be about his recent adventures, including his performance on the grave of painter Vincent van Gogh and detention in a deportation center, “which is worse than prison.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He thanked the media and his defense lawyers, and urged his fans to donate him for paying off his litigation debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

French police arrested Ku\u017ami\u010d in July for digging around van Gogh’s grave at Auvers-sur-Oise. A judge sent him to a detention center for foreigners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He spent two weeks on a hunger strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
