Lithuania to help Belarusians update school textbooks

May 27, Pozirk. The Lithuanian education ministry will assist educators in updating the Belarusian language textbook, opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja’s team reported on Telegram.
Taćciana Ščytcova, in charge of education and research at Cichanoŭskaja’s office, also suggested translating new Lithuanian elementary school textbooks for the Francysk Skaryna Grammar School in Vilnius, Lithuania’s only Belarusian minority school.
Ščytcova also discussed with Lithuanian officials possible changes to minority education legislation and a conference on school education reform.
Her Lithuanian interlocutors reportedly welcomed the conference idea and expressed readiness to help with its organization.
“It is important to find solutions that will help balance two multidirectional tasks: integrating Belarusian children into Lithuanian society and making sure they immerse themselves in Belarusian national culture,” Ščytcova noted after the meeting.
The Belarusian community in Lithuania has grown significantly in the last few years and now numbers more than 60,000 people.
