Valer Mackievič appointed transition cabinet’s chief of staff

October 27, Pozirk. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has appointed politician Valer Mackievič as chief of staff at the opposition transition cabinet, its press office reports.
“My main task is to ensure that the cabinet works as a coherent mechanism with common priorities and a single goal – an independent democratic Belarus without political prisoners and with legitimate government,” Mackievič said.
The transition cabinet in its capacity of the Belarusian opposition’s “main executive branch” faces the challenge of ensuring “the transit of power from the criminal regime to the legitimate and democratic power,” he added.
The politician described the cabinet as a shadow government, noting that it has been developing socially important projects for Belarusians, including an alternative New Belarus passport and by.social platform, in addition to maintaining high-level international contacts.
Mackievič has been politically active in Belarus since 1999 and used to serve as deputy chair of the opposition youth organization Malady Front.
He coordinated campaigns during the presidential elections in 2001, 2006, 2010, and ran in 2007 local elections. He also worked with the embassies of the European Union and the United States.
In 2020, Mackievič headed one of the strategic analytical groups for Cichanoŭskaja’s electoral campaign and was imprisoned immediately after the election.
In the fall of 2020, he joined the Coordinating Council for Political Crisis Settlement, serving as its representative for the European Union’s Eastern Partnership program.
