EU sanctions to target food imports from Belarus – reports

April 18, Pozirk. The European Union’s 14th package of sanctions will include restrictions on agricultural imports from Belarus and Russia, Katarzyna Szymańska-Borginon, a Brussels-based RMF FM reporter, has said on X.
New prohibitive tariffs on food products imported from Belarus and Russia have reportedly been added to draft conclusions of the ongoing EU summit.
A coalition of 12 countries, including Poland, the Baltic States, France and Germany, supports new restrictions, yet some southern countries are reluctant to endorse the move, citing food security concerns, she noted.
Ahead of the EU summit, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said he would advocate additional tariffs on products imported from Belarus and Russia.
About a month ago, the European Commission rejected the ban on food imports from Belarus and Russia despite the overwhelming support from MEPs and the March 7 resolution of the Polish Sejm.
In early March, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk pledged to push for “full sanctions” on food imports from Belarus and Russia.
Next week, the European Commission will start consultations with the EU countries on sanctions against Russia.
Lithuania pushes for the inclusion of liquefied natural gas, which is still imported by many EU countries.
