Case against Cichanouskaja’s aide forwarded to court

April 11, Pozirk. Belarusian prosecutors have forwarded to court a criminal case against Franak Viačorka, an aide to Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja, the Prosecutor General’s Office reports.
The Investigative Committee charged exiled politician Viačorka with conspiracy to overthrow the government, high treason, inciting hatred, organizing mass riots, participating in protests, calling for sanctions, discrediting Belarus, defaming Alaksandar Łukašenka and committing extremism-related crimes.
He will be tried in absentia under special proceedings that target those living abroad and evading contact with investigators.
The Investigative Committee filed criminal charges against more than 90 exiled activists under special proceedings. The Committee for State Security (KGB) also has a list of people it seeks to prosecute in absentia.
Amendments listing 34 offenses and allowing for investigations and trials in absentia came into effect in July 2022.
