Opposition initiative welcomes Germany’s simplified citizenship rules
March 28, Pozirk. Simpler rules for obtaining German citizenship will “significantly ease the life” of Belarusian emigrants, the people’s embassies initiative said on Telegram.
The amended law that will come into force on June 26 would allow obtaining German citizenship without renouncing the original citizenship.
For Belarusians, it means that they would not be forced to submit a request to Alaksandar Łukašenka, said Michaił Taube of the Belarusian people’s embassy in Germany.
“This removes a moral and psychological barrier for many who find it unacceptable to apply to the current self-proclaimed president of Belarus,” the activist said.
The amended law will open up new opportunities, simplifying integration and allowing dual citizenship for emigrants who do not wish to give up their roots, he added.
Dating back to 2020, the people’s embassies represent exiled Belarusians and are associated with former Belarusian diplomats who resigned in protest against vote rigging in the 2020 presidential election.
The embassies operate in more than 20 countries, advocating for Belarusians who cannot receive services from official diplomatic missions.
On February 28, Belarusian authorities blacklisted the people’s embassies as an “extremist” group.
