March 15, Pozirk. Belarus should have a working Constitution that protects people instead of turning them into hostages of the system, says the Constitution Day address by Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja on.
The pro-democracy forces have their vision of the basic law, which “guarantees Belarusians the observance of their rights and freedoms,” she noted.
The politician urged Belarusians to join a discussion of a draft Constitution on the New Belarus application and send their ideas to [email protected] or @AskOffice_Bot.
“Only together we can build a country where human rights are not just declared on paper but are implemented in practice,” Cichanoŭskaja stressed.
Meanwhile, Alaksandar Łukašenka described the current Constitution as “a truly people’s document” in his Constitution Day statement.
Belarus adopted its first Constitution in 1994, three years after gaining independence from the Soviet Union.
