Polish defector Czeczko found dead
March 17, BPN. Emil Czeczko, a Polish soldier who defected to Belarus and made allegations about mass shootings of migrants by Polish military, was found hanged at his home in Minsk on March 17, the Investigative Committee said.
“An investigation team immediately left for the scene. Currently, an examination is carried out and the investigation is under way,” it noted.
A forensic medical examination is also scheduled.
The Investigative Committee considers “all possible versions of the incident, including the violent nature of death.”
On December 17, 2021, Belarusian State Border Committee reported that Polish soldier Emil Czeczko applied for political asylum in Belarus, because of “not agreeing with Poland’s policy in the migration crisis and inhuman treatment of migrants.”
Bialystok District Prosecutor’s Office issued a warrant for Czeczko’s arrest. He could face up to 10 years in prison.
Czeczko served in the 11th Masurian Artillery Regiment of the 16th Pomeranian Mechanized Division.
“The soldier who disappeared yesterday had
serious problems with the law and filed for his resignation from the army. He
should never have been assigned to serve on the border. I demanded an investigation
to find out who is responsible for this,” said Polish Defense Minister
Mariusz Blaszczak.
