Latvia thwarts 109 irregular border crossings from Belarus on August 20

August 21, Pozirk. Latvia on August 20 reported 109 attempts by undocumented third-country migrants to cross the border from Belarus bypassing the official checkpoint.
The apprehended migrants included 28 people who entered the country through a tunnel under the border. They have been return to Belarus.
Latvian border guards recorded the same number of incidents on August 16, registering 45, 18 and 10 attempts, respectively, in the following three days.
Irregular crossings have been reported at the Belarusian-Latvian border for 149 days in a row since March 25.
Its border guards registered 10,068 irregular border crossing attempts this year.
On August 10, Latvia launched the operation Vilkatis to crack down on irregular migration by third-country nationals via Belarus.
Latvia accounted for more than 85 percent of attempted irregular entries into the European Union from Belarus this year.
On August 11, Latvian border guards discovered another tunnel under the border with Belarus.
