Belarus’ cattle population down 3.7 percent year on year

March 29, Pozirk. Belarus counted 3.87 million head of bovine animals in late February, 3.7 percent fewer than a year earlier, according to Pozirk’s analysis of data from the National Statistical Committee (Biełstat).
Every region reported a decline except Hrodna, where growth decelerated from 0.1 percent in January to 0.04 percent in February. The Viciebsk region saw the sharpest drop of 11.6 percent.
The pig population rose by 1.4 percent to nearly 2 million year on year, with only two regions recording declines: a plunge of 25.6 percent in the Viciebsk region and a decrease of 2.8 percent in the Hrodna region. The Minsk region led the growth with 26 percent.
Earlier this year, Alaksandar Łukašenka urged Alaksandar Rahožnik, the newly appointed head of the Viciebsk Regional Executive Committee, to tackle existing problems in the underperforming Viciebsk region, including livestock mortality.
