High-ranking French diplomat visited Minsk a week ago

February 12, Pozirk. Minsk has confirmed that Brice Roquefeuil, director for continental Europe at the French foreign ministry, visited the Belarusian capital on February 5 and 6.  

Belarus maintains “regular working contacts with both France and other Western states,” said Rusłan Varankoŭ, spokesman for the Belarusian foreign ministry, in comments to Russia’s Novosti on Le Monde’s report.

He added that Minsk keeps some bilateral contacts and meetings on the sidelines of multilateral events confidential.

According to him, Roquefeuil met with Ihar Siakreta, a deputy foreign minister, and “representatives of the Belarusian expert and analytical community.”

France did not recognize the results of Belarus’ disputed presidential election of 2020 and limited official contacts with Minsk.

Belarus’ pro-democracy politician Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja met with Jean-Noël Barrot, the French minister for Europe and foreign affairs, today in Paris on October 7 to discuss steps to secure the release of Belarusian political prisoners.

Cichanoŭskaja and Barrot also talked about France’s policy toward Belarus, the military-political situation in the region, support for the independent media and visas for Belarusians.

Cichanoŭskaja also met with French President Emmanuel Macron on October 2 and had a brief conversation with him in May 2025.
