Belarusians in Vilnius collecting signatures against closure of their school

January 25, Pozirk. Belarusians are collecting signatures to an appeal to the Vilnius City Council against the closure of the city’s only school with instruction in Belarusian, the Association of Belarusian Parents said on Facebook.

The move comes after Vilnius Mayor Vitautas Mitalas put forward the proposal that the children of emigrants should be taught only at schools with instruction in Lithuanian.

Parents fear that the initiative may lead to the closure of Francišak Skaryna Gimnasium, Vilnius’ only school with instruction in Belarusian.
