December 18, Pozirk. A total of 89 former Belarusian political prisoners arrived in Warsaw from Ukraine by 4 a.m. local time, while approximately 20 others were taken to Vilnius, opposition politician Pavieł Łatuška told Pozirk.
The buses were met by opposition activists, Polish and German diplomats, journalists and relatives.
Those who arrived in Warsaw include high-profile figures Maryja Kaleśnikava, Viktar Babaryka, Maksim Znak, Alaksandar Fiaduta and Maryna Zołatava.
Former presidential hopeful Babaryka and his former campaign manager Kaleśnikava are expected to travel to Germany, which agreed to shelter them.
Most of those who arrived have been provided with accommodation, while some are staying with their relatives.
In all, Alaksandar Łukašenka released 123 prisoners, mostly his political opponents, on December 13 in a deal with Washington. Most of them were initially taken to Ukraine.
The BySol solidarity fund has raised more than €250,000 in donations for their immediate needs.
