German diplomat visits Belarus to honor victims of Nazi punishers

October 24, Pozirk. Niklas Wagner, the German foreign ministry’s representative for Eastern Europe, has visited Belarus to commemorate the victims of Nazi tyranny, the German embassy reported.

The visit marked the solemn anniversary of the liquidation of the Minsk ghetto on October 21–23, 1943. The diplomat’s trip to Belarus highlights Germany’s commitment to acknowledging and commemorating the crimes committed by Germans in Belarus, the report reads. Joint commemoration remains a cornerstone of German-Belarusian relations, the embassy said.

Nazis organized the ghetto shortly after the invasion of the Soviet Union. It was one of the largest ghettos in the German-occupied territories of Eastern Europe. About 100,000 Jews passed through it. Most of them died.
