Opposition leader attending European Political Community summit in Copenhagen
October 2, Pozirk. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja is attending the seventh meeting of the European Political Community today in Denmark’s Copenhagen, her aide Franak Viačorka has told Pozirk.
The politician received the invitation from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and António Costa, president of the European Council.
This year’s event will focus on Ukraine, security and migration, bringing together about 50 heads of state and government, including Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine and Emmanuel Macron of France, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
EU leaders held an informal meeting in Copenhagen yesterday, focusing on joint European defense and support for Ukraine.
Cichanoŭskaja is expected to speak about Belarus’ key role in European security and the need to include Belarus in the common Eastern European security system. The politician will also discuss ways to secure the release of jailed Belarusian dissidents, sanctions on Minsk, peace talks on Ukraine and the participation of Belarusian pro-democracy forces in high-level European events.
French President Macron came up with the idea of a European political community three years ago, noting the need for a community of states that share the same values as the European Union.
